Ovulation Test in Lahore

An ovulation test checks whether you release an egg each cycle and when your fertile window falls. Irregular or absent ovulation is one of the most common and most treatable causes of infertility. Dr. Kamran Saleem uses the simplest reliable method for your situation.

This is part of our Fertility Assessment & Diagnosis. Tests are recommended only when they are clinically appropriate and likely to guide your next step.

What Is an Ovulation Test?

Several different tests answer two questions.

The first question is whether you ovulate at all. The second is when, so intercourse or treatment can be timed. Home kits, blood tests and ultrasound each answer these in different ways.

Your Fertile Window

It is shorter than most people expect.

The fertile window is roughly the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation. Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before the next period, so in a long or irregular cycle the date moves later.

Ways to Test for Ovulation

Each method has strengths and limits.

  • Urine LH kits: detect the LH surge 24 to 48 hours before ovulation, useful for timing
  • Mid-luteal progesterone blood test: taken about 7 days before the expected period, confirms that ovulation happened
  • Ultrasound follicle tracking: the most precise method, showing the follicle grow and rupture
  • Cycle charting and cervical mucus: free, but less reliable on their own
  • Basal body temperature: shows that ovulation has already happened, so it is poor for timing

How to Use LH Kits

Used well, they are simple and effective.

  • Begin testing a few days before expected ovulation, around day 10 in a 28-day cycle, and adjust for your cycle length
  • Test once or twice daily, ideally in the afternoon, without drinking a large amount beforehand
  • A positive result means ovulation is likely within 24 to 48 hours, so have intercourse that day and the next
  • Kits can mislead in PCOS, where baseline LH is high, and with very irregular cycles

When Ovulation Does Not Happen Regularly

Common causes are treatable.

  • PCOS
  • Thyroid disease
  • High prolactin
  • Low body weight, intense exercise or stress (hypothalamic causes)
  • Premature ovarian insufficiency or declining ovarian reserve
  • Certain medicines

Hormone tests, such as prolactin and TSH, help find the cause. Treatment is described under ovulation induction & PCOS.

When Tracking Is Not Enough

Know when to ask for help.

If your periods are irregular or absent, if kits never show a surge, or if you have been trying for 12 months (6 months if over 35), a proper assessment is more useful than more tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am ovulating?

Regular cycles with mid-cycle changes suggest ovulation, but a mid-luteal progesterone blood test or follicle tracking on ultrasound confirms it.

When should I use an ovulation kit?

A few days before you expect to ovulate, around day 10 in a 28-day cycle, adjusting for your cycle length.

Why does my ovulation kit stay positive?

In PCOS the baseline LH is often high, which can cause repeated or persistent positive results even when ovulation is not happening.

When is the progesterone test done?

About 7 days before your next expected period, which is day 21 in a 28-day cycle, and adjusted if your cycle is longer.

Can I ovulate without having a period?

Occasionally, but regular periods usually reflect regular ovulation, and absent periods usually mean ovulation is not happening.

Are temperature charts reliable for timing?

They show that ovulation has already happened, so they are less useful for timing intercourse than LH kits or ultrasound.

Are ovulation problems treatable?

Yes. Treatment depends on the cause and may include lifestyle changes, treating thyroid or prolactin problems, or ovulation induction medicines.

How long should I try before getting help?

Twelve months if you are under 35, six months if you are over 35, and sooner if your periods are irregular or absent.
